Does a “do it all” mentality really pay off for business owners?
In his article The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, Harvard Business Review blogger and World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, Greg McKeown, talks about how talented people are spread too thin. In turn, he theorizes that this doesn’t allow them to achieve their full potential of productivity and personal satisfaction.
Having seen this many times in corporate America (and as my business goes through it now), I strongly agree with this viewpoint.
Why is knowing your highest point of contribution important for owners of growing businesses? In most cases, it is simple: if you are responsible for a growing business, you have likely become accustomed to wearing many hats and accomplishing a wide range of functions (I know I have). Talented people are often guilty of taking on a lot, because they can do it all. Doing less work and delegating can actually take more discipline than doing the work yourself. The reason is that when we do it ourselves, it gets done and it gets done right.
But where is your time best spent and what tasks can others take so that you can focus on what you’re best at? While the ability to “do it all” may have served you well in the past, your business is finally in its growth stage and it’s time to invest in your future.
For the battle hardened entrepreneur, this simply means ‘letting go’. Just because you can do your own accounting, does not mean that you should continue to do so. For many entrepreneurs, letting go is a skill obtained by experience, and is much easier said than done.
To do this, you need to focus on achieving your highest point of contribution for your company. In turn, you can then hire and collaborate with others whose highest point of contribution intersects with the growth needs of your company. The result being a mutually beneficial symbiosis that positively impacts your business, the people you work with, and serves an important need in the world.
